The first in a planned series on key issues for restoring the Santa Fe River, this paper addresses the question of what happens to the water that flows down the river. How much of it gets into our aquifers and how can it be recovered? This is a critical issue for deciding how much water to release for flow, and for developing a strategy to keep our aquifers charged and healthy so they can help us get through the next severe drought. The authors are Paige Grant and Neil Williams of Watershed West, a local water resources consulting firm. Paige was also the founder and first Director of the Santa Fe Watershed Association. The handbook, the first of this kind on this topic, is addressing, as a priority, basin managers, water professionals and representatives of public authorities – governments and local authorities - who have to make decisions related to water management and who must protect aquatic ecosystems, while trying to limit conflicts between the various users. The handbook also concerns non-governmental stakeholders (NGOs, professional organizations, users’ associations, etc.) concerned by water uses or environmental protection and which are involved in activities in basins.
