Event title A rare opportunity to hike in the Upper Watershed!
Where: Santa Fe
Category: Hikes

Event description:

Join us for a rare opportunity to hike in the upper watershed on Saturday, Sept. 25th! The Upper Santa Fe River Watershed has been closed to the public since 1932 to protect the city’s water source. This summer, the Santa Fe Watershed Association will offer a spectacular guided tour into this nearly pristine area.

We will be joined by local specialists on history, water issues, river health, and native animals and plants. It will be a five mile hike starting at the Nature Conservancy's Santa Fe Canyon Preserve to learn about the first two dams on the Santa Fe River. We will then head up to Nichols' Reservoir, one of the two reservoirs that supply the city of Santa Fe with drinking water, and then to the river to catch and look at aquatic insects.

You’ll visit Ponderosa pine forests, learn about fire ecology, see beaver dams, and learn more about the rich history and current management of our area’s water supply.

This hike is five miles and is rated moderate.

DUE TO SECURITY, YOU MUST REGISTER IN ADVANCE FOR THIS HIKE

To register, please call our office at 505-820-1696.

There is no charge.

Space is limited to 20.

We will meet at the Dale Ball/Nature Conservancy Preserve Parking lot at 9AM.

Thank you to the City of Santa Fe’s Sangre de Cristo Water Company for supporting this Program.
