Sante Fe Watershed Association Programs
Upper Watershed
The Santa Fe Watershed Association has been awarded a one-year grant for 2007-2008, through the US Forest Service Collaborative Forest Restoration Program to develop a comprehensive management plan for the upper portion of our watershed. As the name implies, this will be a collaborative project with the City Water Division, the City Fire Department, The Nature Conservancy, and the US Forest Service Espanola Ranger District.

Living River Initiative
The Santa Fe Watershed Association is committed to reviving our Santa Fe River from the dry ditch it is today, to a perenially flowing stream. Our objective is not to restore the river to what it was before there were 70,000 people living in its watershed, but rather to restore the river to a minimal ecological health that can sustain aquatic life, wildlife habitat, trees, and most importantly, the aquifer which we depend on for a sustainable water supply. Putting flow back in the river is in our own self-interest if we hope to continue living here. It also happens to be in the interest of the rest of nature, but we shouldn't let that stop us...

Santa Fe River Trail
The purpose of the Santa Fe River Trail Project is to update the River Corridor Master Plan from Camino Alire to HWY 599 in order to develop a multi-use recreational (and possibly commuter/alternative transportation) trail along the Santa Fe River. Concurrent with the master planning process will be the development of a pilot project reach of river restoration and trail design. The "Pilot Project" reach is a 3-mile trail segment from Camino Alire to Siler Rd. We will produce construction documents for trail and river restoration concepts, creating the model for future expansion of the river trail through the west side of Santa Fe to Highway 599. The Santa Fe River Trail Project is also a demonstration of coordination between the City of Santa Fe and the County of Santa Fe to work on regional projects.

Adopt-the-River
Community groups, local businesses, and the City of Santa Fe are working with us to restore the urban section of the river block by block through trash clean up, vegetation management, erosion control and advocacy. Adopt the River matches business and community sponsors (who write the checks) and stewards (who do the heavy lifting) with a reach of the Santa Fe River that becomes their special charge.
